Did Lewis Hamilton Have a Hair Transplant?

Lewis Hamilton Hair transplant

Sir Lewis Hamilton is a Formula 1 champion, environmental and social activist, one one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential men in 2020. As a man always in the public eye, his appearance is one of his most important traits. Did Lewis Hamilton have a hair transplant? Let’s take a look at the evidence.

Lewis Hamilton and His Hair

Hamilton is rather infamous for changing his hair nearly as often as he changes his tyres. A man like Hamilton wouldn’t let go of his hair without a fight. Ever since he came onto the Formula 1 scene in 2007—at only 22 years old—he seemed to be dealing with male pattern baldness. Lewis Hamilton’s hairline was receding and his hair was noticeably thinning. Lately, though, many fans have started to wonder what has caused his recent rapid hair growth.

Did Lewis Hamilton get a hair transplant?

Formula 1 drivers spend most of their time in public hiding under a helmet or a ball cap. This typically provides a good cover for thinning hair. Still, for a figure as public as Lewis Hamilton, there is no hiding the obvious.

The internet is full of Lewis Hamilton hair pictures showing the champion’s clearly receding hairline as well as his new, rich head of hair. However, he has long denied getting a hair transplant operation blaming “hotel shampoos and bad-quality lotions” for his hair loss. His claimed secret to recovery? Self-care.

So what’s the real story?

Male pattern baldness is a genetic condition. The concept that regaining such dense hair without surgery is nearly unheard of. While it’s certainly true that better lotions, shampoos, and hygiene practices can help maintain and promote healthy hair growth, Lewis Hamilton’s results are simply too dramatic. Hamilton’s hair wasn’t just thinning, he was balding and now he has a thick full head of hair

Anyone who has seen Hamilton’s father in pictures can clearly see the genetic resemblance. Genetics are one of the leading causes of hair loss. Hamilton’s father is completely bald and it seems his son was on the same path. Sadly, there is nothing that can be done to treat or reverse genetic disorders including male pattern baldness.

What Kind of Hair Transplant Did Hamilton Have?

Broadly speaking, all hair transplant procedures are performed the same way. During a hair transplant, healthy hair follicles are extracted from a donor area (typically the back of the head) before being implanted into the recipient area. While the specifics of Lewis Hamilton’s hair transplant are a secret, our surgeons have looked at his before and after photos and can make some educated assumptions.

Given that Lewis Hamilton still had plenty of healthy hair on his head and that this hair was thick, dark, and matched his skin tone, he was an ideal candidate for either DHI or a Sapphire FUE hair transplant. His hairline had only receded a few inches and he still had dense hair on the back of his head. He most likely chose a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant. This is perhaps the most common transplant method.

Hamilton likely needed about 1,000 grafts to finish his procedure and probably only had to spend a couple of hours in the chair while the surgeons worked.
