What Can I Expect Following A Hair Transplant Operation?
Following your hair transplant operation, your scalp will be covered in a surgical dressing to help prevent infection. An anti-swelling band will also be placed on your forehead to prevent facial swelling. This medical dressing will be removed the next day during your follow-up appointment at our clinic and the anti-swelling band can safely be removed after a few days.
Following a hair transplant surgery, you are likely to notice several small scabs in the recipient area and small red holes in the donor area. These are normal and should heal on their own over the next 10 to 15 days.
How Long Does it Take to Heal After A Hair Transplant?
While each patient’s results and timeline will vary, a general breakdown of the healing process looks like this:
One Day After Transplant
You will be asked to return to our clinic on the day following your transplant for a comprehensive follow-up. At this time, the medical dressing will be removed from your scalp and your doctor will evaluate the preliminary results and clean the site. All of our patients are entitled to complimentary PRP and/or laser therapy to help stimulate faster, fuller results.
Three Days After Transplant
For the first three days, it is necessary to avoid washing your hair, as this can cause the newly implanted grafts to fall out. When you do begin washing again, closely follow the advice given to you by your doctor. Further, you will receive special shampoo and lotion to be used over the next 2 weeks to help with healing.
One Week After Transplant
After a week, most of the newly implanted hair grafts should have begun to anchor themselves in place. During this time your scalp will likely start to itch. As mentioned, DO NOT SCRATCH your scalp. After 5-7 days, many of the implanted hair will fall out. This is known as “shock hair loss” and is a normal, expected part of the healing process and will continue for the next 2-3 months.
15 To 30 Days After Transplant
Within a month, you should return to a pre-operative look. There will be no visible mark from your hair transplant.
One To Six Months After Transplant
Once the transplanted hairs have fallen out, they will begin to grow back on their own. After about three months, the new hair growth will be visible and growth will begin to speed up. After 6 months, every successful graft should be growing hair.
One Year After Transplant
After one year, your new hair will be fully grown and will continue to thicken over the next several months.
18 Months After Transplant
Final results will also be reached at the tonsure.
