What Causes a Failed Hair Transplant?

Failed hair transplant

A hair transplant in Istanbul is a safe, affordable, and life-long solution to chronic hair loss. Hair transplants are minimally invasive, outpatient procedures that are completely safe when performed by an experienced surgeon. Even with all of the recent medical breakthroughs, every patient is unique and reactions can differ greatly from person to person. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, however, these can be minimized with a few basic precautions.

In the overwhelming majority of circumstances, there isn’t much that can go wrong with a hair transplant. This is doubly true if you’re in good health and follow the pre- and post-operative instructions given to you by your hair transplant surgeon. For most hair transplant patients, the end result is likely to closely resemble what was discussed during your consultation. During this consultation, the doctor will outline any potential issues that may arise during the procedure.

Can a Hair Transplant Fail?

While It’s extremely rare for a hair transplant surgery to “fail,” it is possible for a few of the transplanted hair follicles to not take root. In this event, these hair grafts will not produce new hair growth. Skilled surgeons are able to maintain a hair growth rate of over 95 percent, with the majority of patients experiencing close to a 100 percent success rate. Surgeons who work with a team of nurses and surgical assistants typically have the best results. Generally, the leading cause of follicular unit failure is the follicles drying out while outside of the body. Therefore, it’s necessary that great care be taken to perform the procedure as quickly and safely as possible.

Common Problems with Hair Transplants

Hair transplant failures are extremely rare. The single most common issue during a hair transplant is insufficient tissue in the donor area. This can be made even worse if a patient is looking to achieve total coverage with only a single hair transplant, as it may not be possible to cover the entire scalp with the number of hair follicles available.

The most frequent side effects from hair transplant surgeries include bleeding, scabbing, infection, and/or scarring. These are all likely to varying degrees following a hair transplant as the procedure requires several small incisions in the recipient area. By closely following the instructions provided by your surgeon, these issues will quickly fade.

Can a Bad Hair Transplant be Fixed?

Patients not fully satisfied with a hair transplant due to hair grafts failing to take hold can opt for further transplants to achieve the coverage they want. However, this option is limited by the number of healthy hair follicles that can be removed from a donor area. In this case, it’s best to see an experienced hair transplant surgeon at a hair transplant clinic to determine the exact cause of the initial failure to avoid the same issue happening a second time.

How Do I Care For Transplanted Hair?

First and foremost, DO NOT touch or rub the transplant site. This is likely to cause the newly-transplanted hair grafts to fall out before they have had a chance to take root. For the first two weeks, avoid any strenuous or stressful activity, and keep your head as elevated as possible. Additionally, avoid direct sunlight, seawater, or pool water.

In the days and weeks immediately following your hair transplantation surgery, it’s recommended that you follow a specific hair-care routine to minimize any damage to the transplant site. During your follow-up appointment, this routine will be explained to you and you’ll be given medicated lotion and shampoo to use for the next 4-6 weeks.

After about one month, you’ll be able to wash and treat your hair as normal.

What Makes A Good Hair Transplant?

The skill and talent of the surgeon are the most important factors. Hair transplants are extremely precise, delicate processes that require experienced staff to perform properly. Before each operation, each client is evaluated in person by our doctors to determine the best course of action. This professional consultation ensures that all of our clients get the treatment that’s right for them.
