Can You Use Someone Else's Hair For A Hair Transplant

If you’re suffering from hair loss—particularly male-pattern baldness— a hair transplant represents the only truly permanent solution. However, if your hair loss has progressed beyond a certain point, a transplant may become impossible as you no longer have enough hair remaining to cover the balding area of hair loss. If this is the case, the idea of a hair transplant with another person’s hair seems like a logical step. After all, organ transplants are fairly routine—if risky—procedures.

Sadly, a hair transplant with someone else’s hair, even an identical twin, is simply not possible. The immune system immediately recognises the transplanted hair follicles as foreign bodies and attacks them. Any hair transplanted from another person would fall out again without the follicles having taken root in the scalp.

How Does A Hair Transplant Work?

Both of the most common methods for hair transplants—Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)–function more or less the same way. In each, a hair transplant surgeon removes healthy hair follicles from a patient’s donor area. Most commonly, this is at the back or sides of the head. In cases where there is not enough healthy hair in those areas, beard or body hair can potentially be used.

These extracted hair follicles are then implanted directly into the patient’s scalp where they take root and begin to grow hair once again.

Is There Anyone I Can Receive Hair From?

The immune system will quickly react to any foreign body trying to take hold and grow. Tissue rejection is a very real risk in any form of organ transplant. Even donors who are closely related or possess similar hair structures and colours are not eligible. The follicles would be destroyed by the immune system resulting in the new follicles being unable to grow any new hair.

Why Can We Transplant Organs But Not Hair?

In organ transplants, a patient’s body does not reject a transplanted organ because patients are required to take anti-rejection immunosuppressant drugs. These drugs not only suppress the patient’s immune system in defending against the transplanted organ but also suppress it from defending the patient against anything.

Patients who have undergone an organ transplant are more susceptible to diseases, such as cancer. These risks are worth it in the case of something such as a liver or heart. However, hair is simply not worth compromising the body’s entire defense system over.

Can I Get A Transplant With Synthetic Hair?

Yes. Synthetic hair is one of the newest procedures in the battle against hair loss. In a synthetic hair transplant, biofibres are implanted into the scalp instead of hair. These are highly custom fibers that are similar in structure and color to a patient’s own hair.

While these biofibres are a foreign body just like someone else’s hair, they typically trigger less of a response from the immune system as they are not connected to the bloodstream. Regardless, the body is very likely to react with redness, swelling, or other allergic reactions (all possible side effects from any hair transplant). A successful transplant with synthetic hair often requires a certain amount of luck for the body to accept the biofibres.

Are Biofibre Hair Implants Safe?

When conducted by a qualified and experienced hair transplant surgeon, transplants are safe, minimally invasive outpatient procedures. Each individual’s reactions and healing will vary widely. Therefore, it is impossible to predict the exact nature of the results.

Biofibre Hair Implants are CE-certified artificial hair that has been proven to be compatible with the human body. These fibers represent a safe and effective medical treatment for both men and women who are suffering from hair loss.
