Millions of men the world over struggle with hair loss. Until recently, there wasn’t much that could be done about it. However, thanks to recent medical advances, hair transplants are a real option for image-conscious men everywhere. Year after year, more and more men are choosing a hair transplant in Turkey for a number of reasons.
Always being in the public eye means that image is everything. Because of this, numerous male celebrities have had hair transplants in order to keep up their image. As more men are coming forward about their own experiences, men are learning that a full head of hair is within their reach.
Did he have a hair transplant?
The Tesla and SpaceX owner has been tight-lipped about any work he may have had done. In a recent tweet, Musk’s partner, Angela Becamino, claimed that he had had multiple hair transplants over the years.
Indeed, looking at pictures of Musk from the past 20 years, it’s quite apparent that his hair has become far thicker and denser since he earned his fortune. Musk’s hair was noticeably thinning when he launched PayPal back in 1999, since then, though, he has miraculously recovered a full, thick head of hair.
Musk’s hair loss was a textbook case of male pattern hair loss (receding hairline and a balding area on the top of his head). This is a genetic condition that does not reverse course on its own. The only permanent solution to this type of hair loss is hair transplant surgery.
What do we know about his hair transplant?
Since Elon has been quiet about his hair loss treatment, we can only speculate based on his results. Based on when he supposedly had the hair transplant, the results, and a faintly-visible scar, it’s reasonable to assume that he had a FUT hair transplant.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) is a now-outdated form of hair transplant surgery. FUT transplants remove a long strip of the scalp where hair growth is still dense and transplants it to cover an area left behind by balding. The result (if done well) is a fairly natural-looking head of a patient’s own healthy hair. However, these hair transplants are far more invasive and have a higher risk of complications such as scarring than more modern hair loss treatments.
Broadly speaking, all hair transplants function the same way—healthy hair follicles are removed from a donor area before they are implanted into the recipient area. However, modern hair transplant techniques do not need to remove a strip of skin, and can instead, remove only the hair follicle.
During a sapphire FUE hair transplant, the surgeon removes the patient’s healthy hairs from the donor area (typically at the back of the head) and implants them into the recipient area. While the specifics of Elon Musk’s hair transplant are not known, our surgeons have looked through his before and after photos and can make a few guesses.
Overall, Musk was an ideal candidate for a hair transplant. His hairline had only receded a few inches and he still had enough hair on the back and sides of his head. He most likely underwent a FUT hair transplant (it is still possible to see a faint scar on the side of his head).
Since Elon’s hair has seemingly grown back in more than one phase, it’s reasonable to assume that he has had multiple FUT transplants over the last 20 years.
