Sun And Hair Growth

Sun and hair growth

The sun is the key to all life on the planet, but too much of any good thing can be harmful. There are a number of important benefits that sunlight has on healthy hair but, much like the skin, overexposure can be dangerous. How much sun is too much and what can you do to protect your hair? We’ve put together a short guide to answer all your questions.

How Does The Sun Affect Hair?

In short, sunlight causes the body to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is one of the most important compounds when it comes to sustaining a healthy cycle of hair growth, as it stimulates the growth of hair from the follicle. New hair loss could be a symptom of vitamin D deficiency.

The easiest way to get more vitamin D is to spend more time in the sun, however, this could actually cause hair loss to accelerate. While the vitamin D you get from sunlight is good for your hair, overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light could damage your body and your hair

Can Sunlight Damage My Hair?

Too much exposure to sunlight is one of the most common causes of damage to hair shafts – the part of your hair that sticks out of your scalp. Much like getting a sunburn on your skin, sunlight weakens hair by weakening the pigments and proteins that hold it together.

Damage from overexposure to the sun can trigger the production of a compound known as superoxide. Superoxide can temporarily interrupt the hair growth cycle, causing hair follicles to skip from the anagen phase, directly to the telogen phase causing rapid hair loss.

Can I Get More Vitamin D Without Risking My Hair?

While sunlight is the best, most natural source of vitamin D, there are other ways of getting your recommended daily intake without risking hair loss. A safer option is to take supplements and eat foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D such as fatty fish, red meat, and egg yolks.

Additionally, you can protect your hair from potentially harmful UV rays by wearing a hat and staying out of direct sunlight for much of the day. If you are already balding or have thinning hair, it is extremely important to regularly apply sunscreen to the scalp to prevent any further damage.

Are There Other Natural Ways To Prevent Hair Loss?

The most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) which is a genetic trait that has no known cure. However, there are other causes of hair loss such as diet, stress, medications, or illness While there is no guaranteed way to prevent or reverse hair loss naturally, there are many things that can be tried.

  • Medications such as Minoxidil or Finasteride have helped millions of people, however, the results are not permanent and will disappear if the medication is stopped.
  • A diet rich in vitamins B, D, and K has been shown to promote general hair health.
  • Biotin supplements are often used for thinning hair as biotin is a key protein in hair health.

Is there a Permanent Solution to Hair Loss?

Yes, there is. A hair transplant represents the only truly permanent solution to hair loss. A hair transplant procedure uses a patient’s healthy hair follicles to cover up the areas where hair loss is most problematic leaving a fully natural, healthy head of hair that will continue to grow for a lifetime.
