How To Get Rid Of Itching After A Hair Transplant?

how to get rid of itching after hair transplant

A hair transplant can provide a permanent, life-changing opportunity for men suffering from chronic hair loss. While hair transplants are minimally invasive and have a low risk of scarring, there are still things that a patient can do to prevent damage and ensure the best healing. One of the most important things to remember after a hair transplant is that you should not touch, rub, or scratch your scalp.

Why Does My Scalp Itch After A Hair Transplant?

Hair transplants are performed by removing healthy hair follicles from a donor area; typically the back or sides of the head. These transplanted hair follicles are then implanted into the recipient site. How this is done depends on the type of procedure that a patient undergoes.

FUE Hair Transplant

During a Follicular Unit Extraction transplant, the hair transplant surgeon creates a series of nearly microscopic channels in the recipient area. The extracted hair grafts are then implanted into these channels and allowed to heal.

DHI Hair Transplant

Direct Hair Implantation is a slightly modified version of the FUE technique wherein the hairs are implanted one at a time with the help of a Choi implanter pen. This allows for a more even and natural distribution of the transplanted hairs.

Regardless of which technique is used, the implantation process will result in fairly significant scabbing during the healing process. These scabs can cause considerable itchiness and discomfort in the day/weeks following a hair transplant.

What Can I Do About An Itchy Scalp?

It is extremely important that patients do not scratch or rub their scalp after a hair transplant. Doing so is likely to cause the newly implanted hair follicles to fall out as they have not yet had time to properly anchor themselves. Following any hair transplant at our clinic, all patients are provided with a full range of ointments, medications, and shampoos for use in the time following their procedure. The best ways to deal with an itchy scalp after a hair transplant are:

  • Moisturiser/Lotion: Keeping your scalp properly moisturised will help prevent it from drying out and will minimise itchiness.
  • Medicated shampoo: We will provide you with a special medicated shampoo to use that will help to alleviate itching as well as soften the scabs, quickening the healing process. (Please read our guide on shampooing after a hair transplant for more detailed instructions and timelines.)
  • Antihistamines: During the healing process, your body will likely release histamines at the implant site. This is a major contributor to an itchy scalp.
  • Baby oil: Baby oil can be a mild and effective treatment for an itchy scalp.

Pay attention not to rub or scratch during the application of any topical ointments. It is best practice to put a small amount in the palm of your hand and lightly dab it onto the transplant site.

How Can I Protect My Scalp After A Hair Transplant?

The most important things (aside from not rubbing) are to keep your head out of direct sunlight and to keep it elevated. We recommend sleeping in a recliner for the first several days after a hair transplant. Additionally, we recommend a fisherman’s hat to keep the sun off the scalp and collared shirts to avoid pulling on the hair while getting dressed.

When Can I Start Scratching After A Hair Transplant?

The itching should subside after one week. However, in some patients, it can persist for up to one month. It is never safe to scratch during this time period. Once the first hairs have begun to grow (typically after the first 6-10 weeks) the site is fully healed and you can typically resume normal routines.
