Hair Transplant Time To Heal

hair transplant time to heal

Immediately following a hair transplant procedure, the donor and recipient sites will be covered in a surgical dressing to prevent infection. Further, an anti-swelling band is placed on the patient’s forehead to prevent facial swelling. During the follow-up appointment on the day after the procedure, the medical dressing will be removed. However, the anti-swelling band must continue to be worn for up to three days.

Following any hair transplant procedure, the recipient area will develop several small scabs at the implantation site. It is important not to touch or pick at these as this will cause the hair grafts to fall out. These will heal on their own over the next 10 to 15 days.

It is typically possible to return to work within one week post-op.

What Is The Healing Process After A Hair Transplant?

While everyone’s results and timeline will vary slightly, a general breakdown of the healing process looks something like this:

One Day After Transplant

You will need to return to our clinic on the day after your procedure for a comprehensive follow-up. At this time, the medical dressing will be removed, your doctor will evaluate the preliminary results, and the site will be fully cleaned. All patients are also entitled to complimentary PRP and/or laser therapy to help stimulate faster, fuller results.

Three Days After Transplant

For the first three days, it is advised that you avoid washing your hair, as this may cause the newly implanted grafts to come loose. When you do begin washing again, it is important that you closely follow the advice given to you by your doctor. Additionally, you will be given a special shampoo and lotion to use over the next 2 weeks days to assist with healing.

One Week After Transplant

Within a week, most of the newly implanted hair grafts will have begun to anchor themselves into the recipient site. During this time your scalp may begin to itch, but, as mentioned, DO NOT SCRATCH the scalp.. After 5-7 days, many of the implanted hairs are likely to begin to fall out. This is known as “shock hair loss” and is a normal and expected part of the hair transplantation procedure and will persist for the next 2-3 months.

15 To 30 Days After Transplant

Within a month, you will return to a pre-operative appearance. There will be no visible mark from your hair transplant operation.

One To Six Months After Transplant

Once the transplanted hair has fallen out, it will begin to grow back on its own. After approximately 3 months, the newly-grown har will become visible and growth will begin to accelerate. After 6 months, all the hair that will grow likely has, though it is still quite short.

One Year After Transplant

After one year, your new hair will be fully grown in and will continue to thicken over the next 6 months.

18 Months After Transplant

Final results will be reached.

How Should I Care For My Hair After A Transplant?

DO NOT TOUCH the transplant site for the first three days. Afterward, please follow the below guidelines for your first wash.

Step 1: Apply Lotion

Apply the lotion to both the donor and recipient areas. Use a few drops at a time and gently tap it into the transplant site. Give the lotion about an hour to absorb into the skin. Take care to apply the lotion along the same lines as the implanted grafts to help avoid any damage.

Step 2: Apply Shampoo

After one hour, it is time to clean the transplant area. Using the provided shampoo, rub it between your hands to create a foam and gently place the foam over the transplant area without any rubbing motions. Allow the shampoo to sit for 2-3 minutes before carefully rinsing it off.

Step 3: Rinsing

Avoid using water that is too hot or water that is pressurised. The best thing to do is to fill a bowl with warm – not hot- water and to gently and slowly pour it over your scalp.

Step 4: Drying

Do not use a towel as this will likely stick to hairs and pull them out. Instead, use a hairdryer on a low, cool setting from a moderate distance.
