Hair Transplant Scars

Hair transplant scars

Hair transplant surgeons have made amazing progress in the last several years, allowing for both denser final results and less invasive practices. While hair transplants are minimally invasive outpatient procedures, they are still surgical operations and scarring is an unfortunate result of the procedure.

At the Dr Serkan Aygin Clinic, we offer both sapphire FUE and DHI hair transplants. Both of which are proven to offer the lowest risks of scarring when compared to outdated methods. Which method is best for you depends on several key factors such as

  • The current degree of hair loss
  • The density and health of the donor hair
  • The size of the recipient area
  • Your budget

During your free consultation, your hair transplant surgeon will go over all available options to ensure you get the best treatment possible

Transplant Procedures

The two most widely-used hair transplant surgical procedures are FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). At our clinic, we do not offer FUT procedure transplants as they pose the highest risk of noticeable scarring. However, for many years it was the most common practice. FUE transplants offer more natural final results, faster recovery, and significantly less scarring.

Follicular Unit Extraction

FUE technique transplants use hair follicles taken from donor areas – typically the back and sides of the head. Each hair is extracted individually using a special micro-motor, this extraction leaves behind small (up to 1mm diameter) dot scars. Each of these extracted follicles contains one to four hairs and a hair transplant may require thousands of grafts. These extracted grafts are stored in a special, nutrient-rich solution while they are detached from the body’s blood supply to ensure they remain healthy.

The surgeon then needs to create small channels into which the grafts will be placed. Traditionally, this was done with a steel scalpel, However, Dr Aygin has perfected the use of sapphire blades during this procedure. Sapphire blades allow for much finer incisions, causing less tissue damage, and greatly reducing the risk of scarring. Once the grafts have all been placed, the area is bandaged and the patient is able to leave the clinic.

Direct Hair Implantation

DHI hair transplants are a modified version of the FUE technique. During a DHI transplant, each hair is removed individually and implanted directly into the recipient area with the help of a Choi Implanter Pen. This removes the need for the creation of channels and provides the lowest risk of scarring.

Follicular Unit Transplantation

While similar in principle to FUE transplants, the FUT procedure is far more invasive. Instead of extracting each hair follicle individually, surgeons remove a long strip of skin from the scalp. This skin contains healthy hair follicles used for transplantation and is generally taken from the back of the head. The remaining areas are then stitched together, leaving behind a long horizontal scar.

These hairs are then implanted into the recipient site in the same manner as an FUE transplant. Afterward, the patient is free to leave the clinic, however, the stitches will need to be removed after 10 days.

Can I Prevent Hair Transplant Scars?

There are several techniques that can be used to minimise the risk of scars or to cover scars already created. Following your procedure, the area will scab over. During this time it is important that you do not scratch or pick at the area. There also exist several medications – such as vitamin E – that may reduce the formation of scars.

Additionally, all of our clients receive LLLT laser hair therapy following any transplant. This has been shown to stimulate healing and further minimise the risk of scarring. This is an included service in our all-inclusive packages.

Can I Cover My Scars?

Covering the scars with additional operations is an option. It is possible to implant hair directly into the scar left behind by a FUT transplant using the FUE technique. This will depend on the size of the scar and the availability of suitable donor hair.
