Hair Transplant Risks

Hair transplant risks

A hair transplant surgery is the only life-long, natural solution to hair loss. These procedures are minimally invasive, outpatient operations and are completely safe when performed by a qualified, experienced, board-certified hair restoration surgeon. Still, every patient is unique and reactions can differ from person to person.

What Side Effects Can A Hair Transplant Have?

Any operation comes with the risk of side effects. The most common for a hair transplant are:

  • Infection

As with any surgical procedure, infection is a risk. A hair transplant procedure does require thousands of small extraction and implantation sites and each of these runs a risk of infection. This risk can be greatly minimised by having your operation in a renowned hospital with a sterile environment.

  • Bleeding

Bleeding during an operation is to be expected, however, anything beyond a minimal amount runs the risk of complications with securely placing transplanted hair grafts. Prior to a hair transplant, it is advised that patients do not smoke or consume alcohol for 1-3 days.

  • Scabs

A hair transplant requires the surgeon to create as many as 8,000 incredibly small channels in the recipient area to insert the healthy hair follicles into. These incisions are typically only around 1mm in size, however, these incisions will naturally heal over the coming days and scab formation is a normal, natural part of that process. DO NOT PICK AT OR RUB SCABS – This will greatly increase your risk of scarring.

  • Scarring

While hair transplants are minimally invasive outpatient procedures, they are still surgical operations and scarring is an unfortunate result of the procedure. These cars are typically small and fade quickly. They will also likely be covered by your hair.

How Can I Minimise These Risks?

There are several things that can be done both before and after your procedure to ensure a full healthy recovery.

Before The Operation

Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications

To best reduce the risks of bleeding, scabbing, and scarring, medications such as Aspirin must not be taken for three days before your hair transplant operation as they thin the blood. If you are taking any prescription medications, please consult with your doctor before a hair transplant surgery.

Avoid Alcohol, Nicotine, and Caffeine

For at least 24 hours before the operation do not consume any alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine. Again. these substances are known to thin the blood and can have an adverse effect on the efficacy of anaesthesia.

Further, smoking should be avoided for at least 24 hours before – and up to 7 days after – your surgery. Smoking constricts your blood vessels and can decrease blood flow to the scalp, limiting the amount of nutrients available to the new hair grafts. (Generally, it is best to quit smoking altogether to improve the health and density of your hair.)

After The Operation

Avoid Touching The Recipient Site

Following a hair transplant, the recipient site will be quite itchy and irritated. The area must be allowed to heal without being disturbed. Do not rub or scratch the area as the new grafts are still fresh and have not yet taken hold. Rubbing or scratching the area is likely to cause them to fall out.

Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity

For at least two weeks after your operation, avoid all activities such as sport, sexual intercourse, hard work, or even vigorously blowing your nose, as could cause the grafts to fall out.

Avoid Sunlight, Seawater, And Pools

For at least 2-4 weeks, it is advised to avoid direct sunlight or full immersion of the head in water.
