Hair Transplant Growth Chart

Hair transplant growth chart

For patients travelling for a hair transplant in Turkey, it’s normal to have a lot of questions about what results to expect – and when you can expect them. Here, we’ve laid out a comprehensive timeline of what patients can generally expect to see and when.

How Does Hair Grow?

To understand the hair transplant timeline, it is first important to briefly explain how hair grows. Hair growth follows four stages: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen.

  • Anagen

Also known as the growth phase, this is when the hairs emerge from the scalp and begin growing. Approximately 85-90% of scalp hairs are in anagen at any given moment.

  • Catagen

During catagen, the hair follicle shrinks and detaches itself from the blood supply. This phase typically lasts about 2 weeks and only affects about 1% of hairs at a time.

  • Telogen

Known as the resting phase, the hairs now sit fairly loosely in the scalp and remain dormant for up to four months. This phase typically accounts for 10-15% of hair at any time.

  • Exogen

Eventually, new hairs start to grow and the dormant hair is shed. It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day during this phase.

In many patients suffering from patern boldness (androgenetic alopecia), the hair follicles in certain parts of the scalp are no longer entering anagen, preventing new growth. During a DHI or FUE hair transplant, healthy hair follicles are removed from an area unaffected by this balding (commonly at the back of the head), before being implanted one-at-a-time into the recipient site.

Hair Transplant Timeline

  • 1 Week

During the first week immediately following your hair transplant procedure, it is normal to experience swelling, itching, and/or burning and the recipient and/or donor sites. The recipient area will be quite red due to the large number of channels created for the operation. The donor area will recover in a few days, whereas the recipient area may take up to 2 weeks.

  • 2 Weeks

After approximately 6-10 days, swelling and redness should have largely subsided. Next, the recipient area will begin to scab over. During this phase, it is important not to scratch or pick at the healing site. Your hair transplant doctors will provide you with all necessary medications and detailed instructions for hair care during this phase.

  • 1 Month

During the 3rd and 4th weeks following hair transplant surgeries, the new hairs will begin to fall out. This is a completely normal and expected part of the healing process and is known as “shock loss”. The transplant procedure is very traumatic for the hair follicles and triggers the catagen phase, which will be followed shortly by telogen and exogen.

  • 2 Months

At this point, the newly transplanted hair is healthy and safely embedded into the scalp. The hairs now enter a resting phase which can last for up to 2 months. By this time, you will have returned to a pre-operative look.

  • 4-6 Months

During this time period, the hairs will enter the anagen phase and you will benign to see new hair growth. These new hairs will be thin but will thicken as they grow.

  • 9 Months

By this time, the donor area will have completely healed. The newly transplanted hairs should be up to 3” in length and can be groomed. Around this time, the hair will begin to change to a final texture and will thicken considerably.

  • 12-18 Months

Final results will be visible within 12-18 months following a hair transplant surgery. This chart depends on each patient and their needs.
