Depression Hair Loss

Depression hair loss

It is well known that hair loss can lead to depression. However, what is less discussed is that the opposite is also true; depression can lead to hair loss. Depression is the world’s most common mental illness, affecting hundreds of millions of people the world over. The psychological impact of hair loss in those already suffering from depression can create a negative feedback loop and make both problems worse. For patients suffering from moderate to extreme hair loss, a hair transplant in Turkey may be the best solution.

Can Depression Cause Hair Loss?

There are several factors that can lead to hair loss in men and women. The most common cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), which is genetic. The other most common types of hair loss are caused by hormones, age, or mental state. High levels of anxiety and depression cause the body to produce cortisol, a hormone known to inhibit hair growth.

High levels of cortisol have been shown to negatively impact hair follicles, causing brittle and thinning hair. This hair loss may be temporary and there is a chance that hair may regrow on its own once cortisol levels have dropped.

While not a direct result of depression, a condition known as telogen effluvium is a possible side effect of many common antidepressant medications. During telogen effluvium, the hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase causing them to fall out. Please consult with your doctor if you are experiencing any side effects from medication.

Can Hair Loss Cause Depression?

In many people, the loss of hair can negatively impact their own body image. This can worsen existing depression, causing higher levels of cortisol, and leading to further hair loss. This can be a difficult cycle to break out of and can easily overwhelm many people.

Anxiety and depression resulting from hair loss are common symptoms. If you are experiencing hair loss, it may be time to consult with a hair loss specialist to see what options are available to you.

Treatments For Hair Loss From Depression

If you are experiencing sudden hair loss, the first step should be to consult a doctor to determine the exact nature of your hair loss. For those suffering from depression, medication or therapy may be enough to lower cortisol levels and cause your hair to regrow. For those whose hair loss is caused by medication, your doctor may be able to prescribe an alternate treatment. There exist several over-the-counter and prescription medications available today which have been shown to promote hair growth, minoxidil and finasteride being two of the most common.

For patients experiencing longer-lasting hair loss, or for whom a change in medication/treatment is either impossible or has not helped, there are several additional treatments such as LLLT laser hair therapy, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment, or hair mesotherapy. However, the only truly permanent solution to hair loss is a hair transplant.

Hair Transplants

Hair transplants offer the only permanent solution to hair loss. There are several methods that are typically used (such as Sapphire FUE and DHI) depending on each patient’s needs. These two techniques are performed in largely the same way.

During a hair transplant, healthy hair follicles are removed from a donor site unaffected by hair loss. This is typically located at the back of the head, though in some patients, beard or body hair may also be used. These hairs are then implanted into the recipient site (this is where the techniques differ). These implanted hairs are the patient’s natural hair and will continue to grow throughout the patient’s life.
